The COVID-19 HOPE Quilt is a community-based art project and a COVID-19 National Memorial that honors frontline workers and those affected or lost to the pandemic. Loosely based on the AIDS quilt, the COVID-19 HOPE Quilt is a valor and memorial quilt concept featuring blocks to honor Frontline workers and memorial blocks for those lost.
We have received over 650 quilted or painted art block from children as young as 5 to adults age 95 from all walks of life across America for our traveling quilt collection. We invite quilters and their friends and families to join our memorial project for history by creating blocks for our final 10.5-inch square size to share your gratitude and hope and remembrance for America.
In addition to the quilts featured below, we are also proud to share an assortment of individual panel blocks made by our community.

The COVID-19 HOPE Quilts and Letters of HOPE held a 3-day Honor and Sunset Vigil Tribute at the Lincoln and Jefferson Memorials in October 2020, a dark time during the pandemic in America. The Washington Post and local TV News affiliates provided media coverage. Inspired by the story to contribute, High School Teacher, Augusta Dasandiego led the National Art Honor Society members at Riverside High School Leesburg VA to create artworks to honor health care workers, and loved ones lost. Nearly ¾ of this quilt are their stunning contributions. Since then a high school in Aldie, Virginia has created a similar curriculum project and their quilt is underway.

Featuring Panel Blocks by Lightridge High School National Art Honor Students
This quilt was the inspiration of Bella, a talented 14 year old high school art student. She approached her Visual Arts art teacher, Jim Haller, who led his class in having them express their feelings about how the pandemic affected them and how it made them feel. The panels were shipped to Texas and were designed into this stunning quilt by Susie Wong. This quilt was on display at the Houston International Quilt show in 2021.

The Civility Quilt of Hope project features original artwork created by members of the Western Maryland Watercolor Society, members of the Women's Action Coalition, members of Choose Civility: Allegany County, and other local citizens. "We are thrilled to be a part of this meaningful project”, said Lita Havens, Civility Quilt of Hope seamstress and Past-President of the Western Maryland Watercolor Society. "Our members have poured their hearts and creativity into this quilt." The team effort is sponsored by Choose Civility: Allegany County, a grassroots initiative that promotes kindness, respect, and understanding. The Hope Quilt Project aligns perfectly with their mission of promoting civility and positivity in our community.
Machine sewn by Lita Havens and quilted on a long arm machine by Holley Schewe. Blocks made by the following artists (numbers correspond to blocks in the quilt from left to right and top to bottom):
1. HOPE “With my quilt I’m hoping to convey a feeling of peace, tranquility, peace and HOPE” – Leola Saville

For me the star symbolizes hope and healing and family and community support. It reminds me of life-giving healthcare provided by medical staff and the gratitude I had for them during the pandemic and at all times.” – Renee Warnick Mason
10. In Memory of Terry Beitzel, Director of Mahatma Gandhi Center for Global Nonviolence - Renee Warnick Mason

The quilt that was constructed by Schoolhouse Quilters Guild members will be part of a traveling collection that will be shown in quilt shows throughout the country just as part of the collection was hosted and displayed at the Schoolhouse Quilt Show last year in June 2022. In addition, our local COVID HOPE quilt will be part of the online gallery.
Schoolhouse Quilters Guild members that worked on the quilt are as follows: Shelly Brown, Nellie Clarke, Roberta Clarke, Mary Lou Dawson, Lita Havens, Renee Kiddy, Lois Miltenberger, Leola Saville, Holley Schewe, Cheryl Sessler, Suzie Snyder, Kathy Turnbull, and Ina Warnick.
For hundreds of years quilts have told the stories of our lives and our shared histories. They have provided comfort and remembrances of those who have gone before us. Thus is the power of the art of quilting.
